September Is National Yoga Month

National Yoga Month was designated by the Department of Health and Human Services in 2008. One of only a few national health observances, National Yoga Month is also part of an awareness campaign to inspire people to create balanced and healthy lifestyles.

If you’ve never tried yoga, or you’ve been meaning to, National Yoga Month is the perfect time to learn more about it. Many cities now have yoga classes available through businesses, private teachers, and perhaps even the local junior college. You owe it to yourself to make National Yoga Month the month to take control of your health.

National Yoga Month Is A Great Time To Start Your Own Yoga Practice

My doctor has been treating me for lower back pain for almost 20 years. I’ve had physical therapy, cortisone shots and several different drugs, including Vicadin. I’ve walked, laid flat on the floor, used heat, creams and even cried.

It wasn’t until I tried yoga that I actually felt some relief. Yoga helped me loosen up, strengthen up and relax my back muscles better than any massage had. I even feel taller! (If you knew how short I am, you’d find that funny.)

Since retiring though, I fell away from practicing my yoga. That’s kind of silly when you think about it. Retirement should mean that we have more time to do what we enjoy. But then you find so many things to do that you enjoy, that you drop other stuff. And that’s what I did.

Since September is National Yoga Month, I’ve made myself start practicing again. Sometimes just stretching provides relief. I’ve even started walking again.

If you suffer from arthritis, low back pain, high blood pressure or other illness, ask your doctor if yoga would help you & whether you would be able to handle it. I’m glad I did.

Quick Tips For Getting Started With Yoga

You’ll want comfortable stretchy clothes for your yoga excercise. Pants should fit well, but not loose. Many people prefer snug (but not tight) leggings for comfort. When possible, get cotton or one of the newer stay-dry materials.

A nice comfortable yoga mat is also important. You’ll be standing, kneeling and laying on it–face up and face down. You’ll want some cushion between you and the floor. It shouldn’t slip or stick.
